Animals First
The shelter management platform that rescues, shelters and animal control teams run on. I work across the whole product, full-stack.
The product
Animals First is a shelter management platform. Adoptions, foster coordination, medical records, field services, TNVR, donations and community support live in one place, and a shelter runs its day on it: intake, care, adoption, and everything that has to be recorded along the way.
These are operational records, not a catalogue. A wrong date or a lost movement is a real animal nobody can account for, so correctness matters more here than almost anywhere else I have worked.
Where I work in it
Full-stack, across four connected repositories that share a single database. Vue 3 on the front, Laravel and MongoDB underneath, with four different stacks meeting around that one database.
Architecture with DDD, component-driven development and Atomic Design. Daily code review of both human and AI-generated code, and AI-assisted development day to day — prompt engineering and LLM API integration, plus evaluating and ranking generated code across models for correctness, security and best practice.
What I have shipped
- Kennel management, from the ground up — movement history, quarantine status, reordering and hierarchical location management. It became the feature that brought in major new clients.
- The full-stack Vue 2 to Vue 3 migration, led end to end, with internationalisation shipped in the same cycle and no freeze on feature work.
- The work that made the product international — per-customer date formats and phone number handling across 245 countries, both delivered with zero change for existing customers. Each has its own case.
